Topaz Amoore The Telegraph Group Limited January 18, 2009 Children bullet wounds to the head Cairo: Doctors operating the only brain-scanning machine at an Egyptian hospital near Gaza have been almost overwhelmed by the number of Palestinian children arriving with bullet wounds to the head. |
On just one day last week, staff at the Al Arish hospital in Sinai were called to perform CAT scans on a nine year old, two 10 year olds and a 14 year old, each of whom had a bullet lodged in their brain after coming under fire during the Israeli ground assault on Gaza.
Hundreds of victims of Israel's three-week campaign in Gaza have been transferred across the Egyptian border at Rafah for urgent treatment.
They are seen first at Al Arish, nearly 40 miles from the border.
Among them last week was nine-year-old Anas Haref, who arrived with a bullet in her brain.
Shot from close range
Dr Ahmad Yahia, head of the trauma team, broke the news to her grandmother that the girl was not expected to live.
"The bullet has damaged a big part of her brain," said Dr Yahia. "It came in, hit the skull wall and then changed direction downwards."
Dr Yahia, a professor of neurosurgery, believes that the bullet was shot from close range.
"If it changes course inside the brain it has high velocity and its penetrative force is also high," he said.
"I can't precisely decide whether these children are being shot at as a target, but in some cases the bullet comes from the front of the head and goes towards the back, so I think the gun has been directly pointed at the child."
97 children did not survive
Dr Ayman Abd Al Hadi, a medical team leader at the hospital, said: "We've had one child with two bullets in the head and nowhere else. We think this shows something."
He praised the medical teams in Gaza for managing to save so many lives despite a shortage of staff, supplies and equipment.
"But only a very small percentage of children can survive bullet wounds to the head," he said.
"If we see three children here who have survived bullet wounds to the head, there are probably 97 still in Gaza who have not."
|
Doctors at the small but well equipped hospital do not attempt to remove the bullets, but perform a full assessment and attempt to stabilise their patients before sending them to hospitals in Cairo, and in some cases abroad, for more complex treatment.
Of those who survive, few will recover fully.
Paralysed for life
Most child victims of such injuries are likely to be paralysed for life.
Other children have other horrific injuries such as Samer, not yet three years old, who was shot in the back outside her home in Gaza, and had to wait three hours for medical help to reach her.
Her uncle, Hassan Abedrabo, said that Samer was hit by an Israeli bullet that damaged her spinal cord and left her paralysed.
Her sisters, aged two and six, were shot dead in the same close-range attack as they tried to escape tanks bombarding their home in Jabaliya, north of Gaza City.
Their mother was hit twice but survived; Abedrabo said that their grandmother, waving a white flag at the front of the terrified family procession, lost an arm to another bullet.
Samer has now been transferred to a Belgian hospital but the Egyptian doctors who treated her in Al Arish believe she will never walk again.
Samer thinks she knows what happened to her.
"The Jewish shot me," she said in Arabic. "And they killed my little sister. |

Robert Fisk: Israel opens the gates of hell in Gaza
Written by Robert Fisk, The Independent Thursday, 08 January 2009 |
|
So once again, Israel has opened the gates of hell to the Palestinians.
Forty civilian refugees dead in a United Nations school, three more in another.
Not bad for a night's work in Gaza by the army that believes in 'purity of arms'.
But why should we be surprised?
Dead almost all civilian
Have we forgotten the 17,500 dead almost all civilians, most of them children and women in Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon.
The 1,700 Palestinian civilian dead in the Sabra-Chatila massacre.
The 1996 Qana massacre of 106 Lebanese civilian refugees, more than half of them children, at a UN base
The massacre of the Marwahin refugees who were ordered from their homes by the Israelis in 2006 then slaughtered by an Israeli helicopter crew.
The 1,000 dead of that same 2006 bombardment and Lebanese invasion, almost all of them civilians?
Western leaders, editors, journalists, buying same old lie
What is amazing is that so many Western leaders, so many presidents and prime ministers and, I fear, so many editors and journalists, bought the old lie: That Israelis take such great care to avoid civilian casualties.
"Israel makes every possible effort to avoid civilian casualties," yet another Israeli ambassador said only hours before the Gaza massacre.
And every president and prime minister who repeated this mendacity as an excuse to avoid a ceasefire has the blood of last night's butchery on their hands.
Had George Bush had the courage to demand an immediate ceasefire 48 hours earlier, those 40 civilians, the old and the women and children, would be alive.
What happened was not just shameful. It was a disgrace.
Would war crime be too strong a description? For that is what we would call this atrocity if it had been committed by Hamas.
So a war crime, I'm afraid, it was.
After covering so many mass murders by the armies of the Middle East by Syrian troops, by Iraqi troops, by Iranian troops, by Israeli troops I suppose cynicism should be my reaction.
But Israel claims it is fighting our war against 'international terror'.
The Israelis claim they are fighting in Gaza for us, for our Western ideals, for our security, for our safety, by our standards.
|
|
And so we are also complicit in the savagery now being visited upon Gaza.
Excuses Israel army serves up for killings, injuring and maiming
I've reported the excuses the Israeli army has served up in the past for these outrages.
Since they may well be reheated in the coming hours, here are some of them:
That the Palestinians killed their own refugees.
That the Palestinians dug up bodies from cemeteries and planted them in the ruins.
That ultimately the Palestinians are to blame because they supported an armed faction.
Or because armed Palestinians deliberately used the innocent refugees as cover.
It was a lie it was another lie then the Israeli helicopter mowed them down at close range
The Sabra and Chatila massacre was committed by Israel's right-wing Lebanese Phalangist allies while Israeli troops, as Israel's own commission of inquiry revealed, watched for 48 hours and did nothing.
When Israel was blamed, Menachem Begin's government accused the world of a blood libel.
After Israeli artillery had fired shells into the UN base at Qana in 1996, the Israelis claimed that Hizbollah gunmen were also sheltering in the base.
It was a lie.
The more than 1,000 dead of 2006 a war started when Hizbollah captured two Israeli soldiers on the border were simply dismissed as the responsibility of the Hizbollah.
Israel claimed the bodies of children killed in a second Qana massacre may have been taken from a graveyard.
It was another lie.
The Marwahin massacre was never excused.
The people of the village were ordered to flee, obeyed Israeli orders and were then attacked by an Israeli gunship.
The refugees took their children and stood them around the truck in which they were travelling so that Israeli pilots would see they were innocents.
Then the Israeli helicopter mowed them down at close range.
Only two survived, by playing dead.
Israel didn't even apologise.
Twelve years earlier, another Israeli helicopter attacked an ambulance carrying civilians from a neighbouring village again after they were ordered to leave by Israel and killed three children and two women.
|
|
The Israelis claimed that a Hizbollah fighter was in the ambulance.
It was untrue.
I covered all these atrocities, I investigated them all, talked to the survivors.
So did a number of my colleagues.
Our fate, of course, was that most slanderous of libels: we were accused of being anti-Semitic.
And I write the following without the slightest doubt: we'll hear all these scandalous fabrications again.
We'll have the Hamas-to-blame lie heaven knows, |
|
Twenty Israelis dead in 10 years around Gaza is a grim figure indeed.
But 600 Palestinians dead in just over a week, thousands over the years since 1948 when the Israeli massacre at Deir Yassin helped to kick-start the flight of Palestinians from that part of Palestine that was to become Israel is on a quite different scale.
This recalls not a normal Middle East bloodletting but an atrocity on the level of the Balkan wars of the 1990s.
And of course, when an Arab bestirs himself with unrestrained fury and takes out his incendiary, blind anger on the West, we will say it has nothing to do with us.
Why do they hate us, we will ask?
But let us not say we do not know the answer.
[But of course like 9/11 merely a calculated act, not by Arab masterminds, buy by our own sick system and paid killers, which often includes, well you guess it!

Israeli army are cowards says Chavez Calcutta News.Net Tuesday 6th January, 2009 Israel's Ambassador to Venezuela has been expelled amid claims his country is carrying out genocide.
|
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called the Israeli army 'cowards,' while the foreign minister alleged the Jewish state was engaged in 'state terrorism.'
In a formal announcement of the expulsion Tuesday the Venezuelan foreign minister said:
'In this tragic and indignant hour, the people of Venezuela manifest their unconditional solidarity with the heroic Palestinian people, share in the sadness that overcomes thousands of families through the loss of their loved ones, and extends to them a hand by affirming that the government of Venezuela will not rest until it sees those responsible for these criminal atrocities severely punished.'
The Holocaust, that is what is happening right now in Gaza
The statement went on to say that Venezuela 'condemns strongly the flagrant violations of international law by Israel,' and 'denounces their planned utilization of state terrorism.'
In a news conference on national television, Chavez took aim at the Israeli military.
'They are cowards,' he said.
'It's as though a boxing professional were to come here and challenge you to box.
Well, how courageous!
How courageous is the Israeli army!'
Chavez called on Jewish people around the world to oppose 'these criminal policies of the state of Israel that recall the worst pages of the history of the 20th century.'
'With the genocide of the Palestinian people, the state of Israel will never be able to offer its people the perspective of a peace that is both necessary and long-lasting,' he said.
'The Holocaust, that is what is happening right now in Gaza.
The president of Israel at this moment should be taken to the International Criminal Court together with the President of the United States.'
|
Mark Regev, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said he hadn't heard the statements by the Venezuelan leaders but told CNN, 'You know the regime in Venezuela has been one of the few countries in the world that gives automatic support to the Iranian extremists, and it doesn't surprise me that they have affinity with groups like Hamas and Hezbollah,'
He said the expulsion by Venezuela would not be repeated by other countries, even in the Middle East.
'I think, even in the Muslim and Arab countries, there is a fair amount of understanding for what Israel has had to do here,' he said.
Mauritania, one of three Arab League countries that has diplomatic ties with Israel, withdrew its ambassador to the country on Monday.
Venezuela last withdrew its ambassador from Israel in 2006 during the Lebanon War.

99% of House joins 100% of Senate in Supporting Israel with HRes34
Friday Jan 9th, 2009
|
On January 9, 2009, one day after the fascist US Senate voted 100% to support US/Israel terrorism in Gaza with Senate Resolution 10, the House of Representatives, with House Resolution 34, voted 99% to support the same genocide with only 5 No votes.
Democrat Barbara Lee did NOT vote No; she played around in the Present pool, inexcusable in the face of genocide perpetrated with $15 million a day from the American taxpayers.
The text of the resolution was written by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, AIPAC, a Zionist lobbying gang of filthy rich swine who claim to believe in the Jewish superstitution, and are just as much capitalist thugs as the Christian capitalists.
House Resolution 34, with the same text as SRes10, may be found at
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:H.RES.34: THE SPONSORS ARE ALL WELL KNOWN 'LIBERAL' DEMOCRATS AND THEIR REPUBLICAN FRIENDS, WHO CAN NOW SAFELY BE CALLED NAZIS, as the atrocities in the illegal attack on Gaza by US/Israel would certainly make Hitler proud. It was originally sponsored by House Speaker, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, and her co-sponsors, Democrats and Republicans together were: Rep Ackerman, Gary L. [NY-5] - 1/8/2009 Rep Berman, Howard L. [CA-28] - 1/8/2009 Rep Boehner, John A. [OH-8] - 1/8/2009 Rep Burton, Dan [IN-5] - 1/8/2009 Rep Cantor, Eric [VA-7] - 1/8/2009 Rep Clyburn, James E. [SC-6] - 1/8/2009 Rep Hoyer, Steny H. [MD-5] - 1/8/2009 Rep Larson, John B. [CT-1] - 1/8/2009 Rep McCarthy, Kevin [CA-22] - 1/8/2009 Rep Pence, Mike [IN-6] - 1/8/2009 Rep Ros-Lehtinen, Ileana [FL-18] - 1/8/2009 Unlike the Senate voice vote, there was a Roll Call for this support of fascist genocide, Roll Call 10, found at: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2009/roll010.xml The Yes vote was 222 Democrats and 168 Republicans. The No vote was 4 Democrats and 1 Republican The Present vote was 22 Democrats and Not Voting were 8 Democrats and 8 Republicans. IT IS AN INSULT TO VOTE PRESENT OR NOT VOTE AT ALL IN THE FACE OF GENOCIDE. |
ALL PERPETRATED WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS
AND THIS OUTRAGE HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR 61 YEARS
PERPETRATED 100% BY DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS AT ALL LEVELS OF OFFICE which is why you have to vote socialist or Green [or anything but Democrat or Republican TheWE.cc] if you want peace in the Middle East. [Or anywhere else TheWE.cc]
