Too big to fail?   We'll see
“...The capital we thought was there is gone.   A lot of it was actually translated over the years into Hamptons villas, Gulfstream jets, and other playthings that will now go up on Ebay or some equivalent as we turn into Yard Sale Nation in a general liquidation of remaining assets.... Everything is for sale and nobody has any money.”

A bail-out to nowhere
The tremors come faster now. Candidate McCain mimics Herbert Hoover asserting that the economic “fundamentals” are sound, even as Wall Street asset Hank Paulson announces the latest lofting of US Treasury life preservers.
The fiscal flotation devices will allow Hank’s cohorts a “soft landing” in more comfortable climes than await the majority here in America the Deflating.
Even the corporate media, reflexively dedicated to promoting “consumer confidence” and keeping the gullible in their seats long enough for the swag-toting executive larcenists to make for the exits, murmur about a new 1929.
As if stock market mattered to ordinary people
With the usual misdirection, the press reports plummeting Wall Street stock prices as if they mattered to ordinary people.
In fact, as economist Dean Baker has repeatedly pointed out
“[T]he stock market is not a good barometer of the economy’s health.
“It can be driven up as a result of a redistribution from wages to profits, or simply as a result of irrational exuberance.
“Neither is good for the economy as a whole, although anything that pushes up stock prices is obviously good news for the small minority of people who own substantial amounts of stock.”
Real wages stagnant for 34 years
Meanwhile, Baker’s colleague at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, Mark Weisbrot informed Miami Herald (9/1/08) readers that real — inflation adjusted — wages have been virtually stagnant for 34 years.
Since 1973, as the stock market climbed, “productivity — the amount that workers produce per hour — increased quite substantially...”
But, while this “ ‘useable productivity’ — the increased production that we can expect to be reflected in rising wages —” rose 48 percent from 1973 to 2007, paychecks didn’t.
Only well-connected at top benefited
The “economy” grew but only the well-connected at the top benefited.
Wall Street exulted in the new profits extracted from the under-compensated toil of the same working people who were now repeatedly urged to cheer the increasing fortunes of their masters.
As the downscale waged workers fell behind, they were offered EZ credit, first through deregulated credit card loan sharkery, and then, as the real estate bubble was ruthlessly inflated, through the infamous “home equity extraction” gambit and/or serial “house flipping.”
Deferred wages converted into crap-shoot schemes
Their “defined benefit” pension plans — deferred wages — were converted into crap-shoot “defined contribution” schemes and Enronized.
Most people’s “wealth” is represented by their house and maybe their car.
People were encouraged to feel (and act) richer as the housing bubble and its heady irrational exuberance seemed to boost house values by $8 trillion nationwide.
But now the music has stopped, the chickens flutter home to roost, and the piper shrieks for payment.
As massive asset deflation continues, housing prices return to their long-term historic levels, and on average Baker notes, that vanishing $8 trillion in illusory “housing bubble wealth” translates into a $110,000 hit per homeowner.
These hapless folks, “will see much of the equity in their home disappear.”
Using house as an ATM machine
Since so many Americans essentially re-mortgaged themselves in bubble time — using their house as an ATM machine through an equity withdrawal — and continued to consume at a level their stagnant or declining wages no longer allowed, this implacable (and unfinished) deflationary swoon spells real pain.
Yet the media / political focus is on the Wall Street Weak and Dr. Hank’s hundred billion dollar injections.
Pundits and “analysts” worry aloud about the fate of a rumored “free market economy” — a construct that exists only in the misty realm of unicorns, Easter bunnies, tooth fairies, “honest Republicans”, and “good corporate citizens.”
Government securing outlandish private profits of society’s greediest people
Sadly and unsurprisingly the story is an old an familiar one: Government socializing costs and risk while securing the outlandish private profits of society’s greediest people.
There’s nothing new here.
The more interesting question is whether we are at a point in our rather lamentable and bloody history when the usual tricks may no longer work.
In a country that no longer manufactures much except weapons of war, or cultural weapons of mass distraction, kept afloat mainly by massive infusions of foreign capital, with a domestic/domesticated population famously dependent on “credit” and buried in personal debt, are we approaching the End of Something?
Great Depression U.S. still had —
As James H. Kunstler has reminded us lately, in that last great greed-induced deflationary spiral, called the Great Depression, the US had not yet squandered its vast oil and gas reserves, its productive industrial base, demeaned and vanquished its proud and self-conscious working class, depopulated its agricultural landscape, emptied and beggared its great cities.
And outside of a few genocidal romps against the American Indian and the “pockmarked Khadiak ladrone” Filipinos, the population had not perhaps yet acquired the taste for blood, booty, and blitzkrieg that now so exemplifies The American Way.
“The Great Depression of the thirties never came to an end,” wrote John Kenneth Galbraith (American Capitalism, 1952).
“It merely disappeared in the great [W.W.II] mobilization of the forties.”
And — by the 1950s —in an effort to prevent another Depression, “the permanent war economy was born.”
For decades, a not-yet bankrupt America found the money for easy living, suburban sprawling, and endless war: Guns and butter.
But now the butter may have to be put aside.
Our foreign creditors grow weary of enabling our haughty bloodlust.
European Union with its prosperous cities
The European Union, with its prosperous cities, assertive worker culture, and strengthening currency has surpassed the US in economic size and power — not to mention standard-of-living.
Presidential candidates flatter a distracted public that the US is “the hope of the world — the shining city on the hill.”
But like much of their hucksterism, it’s a comforting lie.
That hour (if ever it existed) has passed.
Something less congenial this way comes.

9 percent of American homeowners with mortgage

A foreclosure sign stands outside an existing home on the market in Denver.

A record 9 percent of American homeowners with a mortgage were either behind on their payments or in foreclosure at the end of June, as damage from the housing crisis continues to mount, the Mortgage Bankers Association said Friday, Sept. 5, 2008.

US unemployment jumped to a five-year high of 6.1 percent in August as 84,000 jobs were slashed, according to a report Friday that sparked fresh fears about recession in the world's biggest economy.

In his much-ballyhooed acceptance speech, Barack Obama declared that he would 'finish the fight against the terrorists who actually attacked us on 9/11'.

If Obama wishes to be true to his promise, he could begin with his own running mate, Senator Joe Biden.

Biden was one of several top Washington officials who met with Lieutenant General Mahmoud Ahmad, the head of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) on and around September 11, 2001.

9/11’s Accomplices vie for US Presidency
Obama and McCain campaigns fan
"war on terrorism" hysteria
by Larry Chin
Global Research, September 7, 2008
In his much-ballyhooed acceptance speech, Barack Obama declared that he would "finish the fight against the terrorists who actually attacked us on 9/11".
If Obama wishes to be true to his promise, he could begin with his own running mate, Senator Joe Biden.
Biden and the ISI chief
Biden was one of several top Washington officials who met with Lieutenant General Mahmoud Ahmad, the head of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) on and around September 11, 2001.
The ISI is a foreign branch of the CIA. "Al-Qaeda" is a covert operation that is managed by Anglo-American military-intelligence.
Ahmad, the "9/11 money man" who delivered funds to alleged lead suicide hijacker Mohammed Atta prior to the attacks, met personally with Biden on September 13, 2001.
This case, detailed in Michel Chossodovsky’s Political Deception: Missing Link Behind 9/11, remains one of hundreds of smoking guns revealing direct US connections to 9/11, for which Biden has never provided a credible explanation.
At the same time that he was meeting with a man directly connected to the alleged hijackers, Biden was among the loudest and most bellicose voices joining Bush-Cheney for the bombing of Afghanistan, in retaliation for 9/11.
Biden expressed an interest in "personally shooting Osama bin Laden".
Not surprisingly, John McCain expressed the same post-9/11 bloodlust, in his infamous editorial, "War is hell.   Let's get on with it."
Biden’s tune has remained unchanged, to this day.
He wants to "finish the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban", and (in language that appears to be the new neoliberal "talking point") "take out the ones who actually attacked us on 9/11".
The fact that Biden and McCain, two major shills for the "war on terrorism" lie, are vying for White House power speaks for itself.
When recently confronted by an independent journalist about his meeting with Mahmoud Ahmad, Biden offered a series of non-sequitors, and then had his security guards escort the inquiring individual away.
Biden the insider
Dirty politics and back-door deals are nothing new for Biden, the perfect neoliberal establishment insider who has made a career of opportunism, obstruction, and political cover-up.
Biden, the senator of Delaware, the largest tax haven for corporations in the US, has played a key role in virtually every major US policy decision over the past two decades:
Every military conflict.
Supreme Court confirmations.
Cabinet confirmations.
Judiciary appointments.
Congressional probes (cover-ups) of major political scandals.
Biden, a longtime Council on Foreign Relations stalwart, is a leading architect of "Homeland Security".
He considers his "national security credentials" to be "unimpeachable".
Joe Biden and his longtime Senate colleague and war criminal/Keating Five "friend" McCain are as responsible for the current world crisis as anyone else alive.
Obama’s bombastic deception
If Barack Obama genuinely wishes to "take out" those who "actually attacked us" on 9/11, he would "take out" the legions of elite sponsors who have made his own rise to power possible.
He could begin with his own foreign policy guru, super-elite Zbigniew Brzezinski, the virtual creator of Islamic terrorism during the Carter administration, who suggested that a Pearl Harbor-like attack, a "massive and widely perceived external threat" would be useful; the man whose vision of "American primacy" and destablization across the Eurasian "Grand Chessboard" has been a lifelong obsession.
Obama might also "take out" the Clintons, and other neoliberal bigwigs supporting his campaign, given the fact that they were instrumental in sowing the seeds of 9/11 throughout the 1990s.
Obama should "take out" members of Bush-Cheney, and members of Reagan and George H.W. Bush presidencies, and a worldwide legion of covert operatives, policy advisors, think tank figures (Project for a New American Century, etc.), and oil executives who "lit the match".
He might also tell the truth about the global war for oil.
Obama, of course, will do nothing of the sort.
(And Bush-Cheney will not be prosecuted, no matter what he and Biden say on the campaign trail to the contrary.)
Obama will do nothing.
He will leave intact the abomination of the Patriot Act, permit illegal surveilliance, torture and renditions.
He will endorse the cover-up of the 9/11 Commission, and deepen the militarization of the US homeland.
The winner of the 2008 election:
The Big Lie
In the book 'The Iran-Contra Connection: Secret Teams and Covert Operations in the Reagan Era' by Jonathan Marshall, Peter Dale Scott, and Jane Hunter, the authors describe how the combination of government recalcitrance and public acquiescence hampered attempts to limit presidential power and CIA abuses in the 1970s and 1980s.
One telling passage quotes Joe Biden:
“And when legislators tried to write a new CIA charter to limit presidential powers and check abuses, [President Jimmy] Carter’s people fought every inch of the way. Exhausted liberals caved in.
“To complaints from the American Civil Liberties Union, that the proposed charter was too permissive, Senator Joseph Biden (D-Del) said, "Let me tell you something, fellas.
“The folks don’t care.
“The average American could care less right now about any of this. You keep talking about public concern. There ain’t none.”
Today, Bush-Cheney and the respective presidential campaigns hold the people of the world in even greater contempt.
The election is already over.
The bipartisan consensus responsible for the "war on terrorism" lie has never been more ironclad.
The next presidential administration will be a continuation of the Bush-Cheney nightmare - in substance, if not in style.
The only thing left to be decided (besides the exact choreography of the final electronic vote fraud) is which lie about "change", which brand of poison to pour down the throats of the American populace.
Will it be the classic neoliberal establishment deception of Obama-Biden?
Or the more overt insult and slap in the face, and the most cynical appeal to the lowest of lowest common denominators: the insane and deeply corrupt John McCain, and the deeply corrupt insane, willfully stupid (George W. Bush-like), vitriol-spewing psychopath Sarah Palin (whose chief qualification appears to be her direct criminal ties to Alaskan energy interests)?
The "Big Lie" comes with both.

Living as a veteran of the streets
A homeless man in Washington DC.

One in four homeless people in the US is a military veteran.

A disproportionate number of the homeless are military veterans
A disproportionate number of the homeless are military veterans
One in four homeless people in the US is a military veteran, a report has found, even though veterans make up only 11% of the adult population.  One former soldier told his story to the BBC's Vincent Dowd in Washington.
Only a year ago, Ben Israel could have been forgiven for thinking nothing would ever go right with his life again.
He had been mainly homeless since his early 30s, living either on the streets of the richest nation in the world or in a selection of public shelters. Sometimes he lived in his car.
Ben was born on an army base in the US state of North Carolina, where his father was a soldier.
When he was 18 months old he swallowed — or maybe was given — furniture polish.  He was in a coma for days.
He blames this for his occasionally hesitant speech and some of the problems he has had throughout life.  "It caused me issues," he says simply.
Yet today you only need to spend a few minutes with him to recognise a keen intelligence too.
Soup kitchens
In 1973, conscription ended in America — but that year Ben volunteered for the US Army artillery corps anyway.
What I would mainly do was move
Ben Israel
He was just 17 and says he feared winding up in prison otherwise, because there was so little money around.
He just missed Vietnam but saw service, less dramatically, in Panama.
He was only in the army for three years.
I ask if he has ever married.  "Not officially," he says.
After the US Army, mainly he travelled and worked and he studied a little.
From the late 1980s to November 2006 he was usually homeless — although there were brief periods here and there with a roof over his head.
He tries to recall the cities whose soup kitchens he got to know too well: "Dallas, Texas.  Miami, Florida.  Atlanta, Georgia — twice.  Fayetteville, North Carolina.  Portland, Oregon..."
He acknowledges there were others he may have forgotten.
"What I would mainly do was move."
Charity salvation
Ben, at 51, is honest enough to acknowledge that some problems of his thirties and forties were of his own making.
A man sleeps rough on the streets

Ben Israel believes more focus is needed on housing veterans
Ben Israel believes more focus is needed on housing veterans
But he also believes his middle years showed how badly America's Department of Veterans Affairs — the VA — has sometimes focused its resources.
"They are a giant cash-cow but they are spending their money in the wrong areas.  If they put more emphasis on housing their charges that would solve most of their issues out on the street."
Ben's life has improved — more than he ever expected it might.  But ultimately salvation came from a charity, not the VA.
He was in line at one more soup kitchen when he was approached by someone from Pathways to Housing.
It is a New York-based charity which, for 17 years, has helped the homeless who have psychiatric problems.
Important for Ben was that, as Pathway's mission statement makes clear, they do not require treatment or sobriety as a pre-condition of getting someone into an apartment.
Their philosophy is that the path to recovery starts with getting off the street and under a roof.
Watching squirrels
Ben's apartment in Marshall Heights in Washington DC is not big but it is clean and well kept.
Ben intends to find a job again and get off Social Security Disability Insurance.  He dreams of being an electrician.  "But I want a career — not a job," he says.
We get in a cab and travel to Franklin Square, in downtown Washington.
It's where a lot of still homeless veterans hang out during the day — some of Ben Israel's age, some a little younger.  There is not much to do but watch the squirrels.
Ben passes on the phone number of the people who after almost two decades helped him escape his wasted life.
He is a middle-aged man who found a sort of salvation when all hope seemed gone.  He wants others to share in the same good fortune.

Emblems of the Bush Age: Adrift in a Sea of Booze
By Alexander Cockburn
Politicians here still parrot Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign against teen drug use.
Barrack Obama's in trouble for supposedly having told teens as part of his counseling that he too used bad drugs including heroin.
But the needle and the increasingly potent joint don't hold a candle to simple booze in which the current cohort, stretching from mid-teen high schoolers through to college age kids, is marinating itself into weekly oblivion.
Though there are those who deprecate claims that youth is drinking more than earlier cohorts, it seems a new lost generation is in the making, emblem of the Bush Age.
One big concern touted in the press endlessly used to be date-rape, with the girl-victim laid out by drugs.
Now it's binge-drinking. High schoolers, and in particular high school girls, drink hard liquor in large quantities as fast as they can and pass out. Sometimes they get gang-raped and wake up pregnant.
This is the culture.
Even meth addiction looks better.
Much of it started with the Girls Gone Wild home videos, which were largely filmed during Spring Break.
Now it's spring break all year round. Google tries to strip these off Youtube and such as soon as they go up. But there are undergound sites that may be searchable.
For fun at frat or sorority Parties, the pledges — that is, those who have been accepted for membership — are made to drink until they throw up and pass out.
Then they are stripped by the slightly less drunken contingent and have swastikas and racist epithets written on their bodies in permanent magic marker, are posed in indecent positions and the whole affair is filmed and posted on Facebook/My Space websites.
If parents really want to know what they're kids are up to they should read the Facebook entries — but it's probably better not to know.
A friend of mine with a frat boy son returned shaken from one weekend visit to the frat house having witnessed a lad who vomited on the sleeping fathers during "dads' weekend".
This was after he had drained a bottle of Grey Goose vodka, following a day of nonstop drinking.
"I don't know how he survived," my friend concluded in some perplexity.
A recent survey done in Montana, admittedly a heavy drinking state across all age groups, had 38 percent of high schoolers admitting binge drinking within the past 30 days, above the national average of 28 percent.
Binge drinking is defined in these stats as having five or more drinks in one session.
Over a third of these young boozers said they'd been in a car whose driver was also busy getting loaded.
You trip over reports of the resultant auto disasters all the time, in any local paper.
Teen and college drinkers include here returning vets from Iraq, mostly in their mid-20s.
For example Portland State University in Oregon, had 800 vets enrolling this fall, and many other colleges across the country experienced a similarly huge inrush.
These include a predictable complement of people with severe problems of post traumatic stress syndrome likely to produce sociopathic behavior.

Over 1.3 million people, one in six New Yorkers, cannot afford enough food, with queues at soup kitchens getting longer, anti-poverty groups say.
The New York City Coalition Against Hunger says the number of people who use food pantries and soup kitchens in the city increased by 20% in 2007.
Some of the food distribution points are struggling to meet demand.
The coalition blames the situation mainly on increased poverty as well as government cutbacks in food aid.
Federal supplies of food cut by as much as three-quarters
"This annual survey of food pantries and soup kitchens shows that more working families, children, and seniors are being forced to seek emergency food," Joel Berg, the coalition's executive director, said in a statement.
"Given that hunger continued to increase in the city, even when the economy was still strong last year, it is no wonder that now, when the economy is weakening, lines at pantries and kitchens are getting even worse."
Some food outlets said they would not be able to distribute turkey rations for Thanksgiving on Thursday, because their federal supplies of food had been cut by as much as three-quarters.
Food Bank, a non-profit organisation which distributes food to about 1,000 pantries, said its shelves were half full compared with usual levels.
According to a survey, 59% of New York's food programmes, up from 48% last year, said they did not have enough resources to meet demand.
The US Department of Agriculture says 12.6 million households nationwide, or more than 30 million people - 10% of the population - did not have enough food at some point in 2006.

The Coalition’s survey estimated that pantry and kitchen use increased by 20% in 2007, on top of the 11% increase in 2006 estimated by last year’s survey.
Sadly, the need for the New York City Coalition Against Hunger is greater than ever, with the city facing an increasing crisis of poverty and hunger.
During 2006, an average of 1.3 million New York City residents, including over 400,000 children, lived in households facing food insecurity, according to federal statistics calculated by the Coalition.   This number was an increase of 1.4% over the previous three-year period.
City Human Resources Adminstration data also suggests a growth in the need for emergency food, with 323,000 more meals being served by City-funded programs in 2006 than 2005.
In the Coalition's annual survey of hunger in New York City - the most comprehensive of its kind - the city's emergency food programs estimated an 11% growth in need from 2005 to 2006, on top of 6% growth in the previous year.
Because these agencies were unable to obtain enough food, money, staff, and volunteers to meet their growing need, nearly half (46%) were forced to ration food by turning people away, reducing portion sizes, and/or limiting hours of operations.
Clearly, the benefits of the city's economic upswing have not reached low-income citizens.
The result has been hunger that hangs on.   The fastest-growing populations at emergency food programs are working parents, children, and senior citizens.
While the public often uses "hungry" and "homeless" interchangeably, most of the people forced to use pantries and kitchens do have a home - just not the money to purchase all the food they need.
This accelerating increase in hunger....

US Income Gap Widens, Richest Share Hits Record
The gap between America’s richest and poorest is at its widest in at least 25 years, with the wealthiest taking home a record share of the nation’s income that exceeds even the previous high in 2000.
by Karey Wutkowski
Washington — According to recent data from the Internal Revenue Service, the richest 1 percent of Americans earned 21.2 percent of all U.S. income earned in 2005. That is a significant increase from 2004 when the top 1 percent earned 19 percent of the nation’s income.
The previous high over the past 25 years, when such data were compiled, was in 2000 when a bull market brought the figure up to 20.81 percent.
The Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan tax research group based in Washington, said the wealthy benefited in 2005 from a healthy, growing economy and higher-than-average price inflation.
The IRS data included all of the 132.6 million tax returns filed in 2005 with a positive adjusted gross income, or AGI, also including people who did not earn enough to owe taxes.
AGI is a figure used to calculate an individual’s income tax liability and includes all gross income adjusted by certain allowed deductions, such as moving expenses, health savings account deductions, alimony paid and retirement contributions.
In 2005, 90.6 million people who filed tax returns paid taxes into the Treasury, and 42 million with a positive AGI used exemptions, deductions and tax credits to reduce their federal income tax liability to zero.
Democratic U.S. presidential candidates have raised the widening income gap as a campaign issue, proposing to raise taxes on wealthier Americans to pay for programs that would benefit lower-income families.
To make the top 1 percent of wealthiest Americans in 2005, a taxpayer had to earn at least $364,657. That figure is an increase from 2004, when the cut-off point stood at $328,049.
Homeless shelter
In 2005, the top 50 percent of American earners brought in 87.17 percent of the nation’s income, also an all-time high for the data available.
The previous high for that figure was also in 2000, when the richest 50 percent of Americans earned 87.01 percent of the income.

School Guards Break Child's Arm And Arrest Her For Dropping Cake
Police and security violence continues unabated
Steve Watson
Infowars.net
Friday, Sept 28, 2007
School security guards in Palmdale, CA have been caught on camera assaulting a 16-year-old girl and breaking her arm after she spilled some cake during lunch and left some crumbs on the floor after cleaning it up.
The incident occurred last week at Knight High School in Palmdale and was caught on a cell phone camera by another pupil who was then also assaulted by the security guards.
Watch video of the incident here and here.
The girl, Pleajhai Mervin, told Fox News LA that she was bumped while queuing for lunch and dropped the cake.
After being ordered to clean it up and then re-clean the spot three times, she attempted to leave the area out of embarrassment but was jumped on by security who forced her onto a table, breaking her wrist in the process.
Pleajhai also says that the security guard in the picture yelled "hold still nappy-head" at her, which at the time she did not know was a racist comment.
In an even more shocking development the security guards later had the mother of the girl arrested after she sought out an attorney and demanded that the guard be arrested, telling her that if she wanted the guard detained then she herself would also be charged with battery after she allegedly pushed the guard and an assistant principal of the school.
She has also been suspended from her job at another school in the county.
The school expelled Pleajhai for five days before then having her arrested for battery and for littering (the dropping of the cake).
Then they had the pupil who captured the video arrested along with his sister who was merely present at the scene.
A walkout is planned for this morning by some students, after which the protesters will call for the firing of the main security guard involved.
The incident serves as another unbelievable case in the wave of police brutality sweeping the country.
In recent days we have covered multiple incidents of this nature and have compiled them into a page which will no doubt be added to in the months to come.
Commentators have linked the increased cases of brutality with a post 9/11 mentality in America where civil liberties have been totally diminished and the anointed "authorities" simply consider themselves above the law.
Former Reagan government official Paul Craig Roberts, for instance, has succinctly described the mentality as having turned "an epidemic of US police brutality into a pandemic".
The media reports linked above clearly sympathize with the girl and her mother but only because the girl "fully complied with the guards' orders".
What on earth have things come to when children are being physically assaulted and arrested in schools by huge fat thugs 5 times their size for "not complying with orders"?
Police and security officials are being trained that it's OK to beat, torture and taser anyone should they not answer their questions or comply with their every order.
The "security" and well being of citizens is no longer the concern of these moronic hired beefbrains who revel in their false positions of power.
Ask yourself, why is the security guy pictured above wearing shades indoors?
Because it is part of the gang mentality of these idiots who think its cool to put the fear of life into small kids and then break their bones if they fail to cower like mice when picked upon.
We have been covering the rise of the police state mentality in tandem with the erosion of liberty for some time now.
The incident narrated above represents a stark evolution.
Watch the following clip from around ten years ago which was featured in Alex Jones' 2004 Film Martial Law: Rise of the Police State, where police assault and break the arms of peaceful protestors.
The difference now is that the police and security guards are breaking the arms of children and tasering students for merely asking questions or for dropping birthday cake.

Epidemic Of Police Brutality & Harassment Sweeps America & UK
An epidemic of violence and harassment is sweeping the country.
Police are being trained that the general public are the enemy and that they can engage in outright brutality without recourse.
Taser deaths are skyrocketing because the police have been ordered to use "pain compliance", otherwise known as torture, to subdue and oppress the citizenry.
Police are also increasingly completely unaware of the laws they are supposed to enforce and have resolved to invent offences out of thin air as an excuse to harass people.

Youth Institutions, 'Youth Camps,' Paramilitary Abuse
Naked, Dark, cells smelling of urine and feces
On the day of our arrival we observed a 13-year-old boy sitting in a restraint chair.   Reportedly, he was placed in the restraint chair to prevent self-mutilation.
No staff approached him, and he was not allowed to attend school or receive programming, counseling, or medication.
This boy had been severely sexually and physically abused by family members and had been in several psychiatric hospitals prior to being sent to the Institution.
Just before our arrival, he had been locked naked in his empty cell.   His cell smelled of urine, and we observed torn pieces of toilet paper on the concrete floor that he had been using as a pillow.
Girls in the SIU (Special Intervention Unit for youth with behavioral and disciplinary problems, and youth who are suicidal) are punished for acting out or for being suicidal by being placed in a cell called the “dark room.”
The “dark room” is a locked, windowless isolation cell with lighting controlled by staff.
When the lights are turned out, as the girls reported they are when the room is in use, the room is completely dark.
The room is stripped of everything but a drain in the floor which serves as a toilet.
Most girls are stripped naked when placed in the “dark room.”   According to staff, the reason girls must remove their clothing before being placed in the darkroom, is that there is metal grating on the ceiling and the cell door which could be used for hanging attempts by suicidal girls.
Such suicidal hazards should be remedied rather than requiring suicidal children to strip naked.
One girl told us that the weekend prior to our visit, she was placed naked in the “dark room” from Friday until Monday morning.
She stated that she was allowed out of the cell once a day to take a shower, but received all her meals inside of the cell.
Another girl told us that in July 2002, she was placed in the “dark room” with the lights off for three days with little access to water as her requests for water were largely ignored.
During our visit to the girls’ SIU there were 14 girls present.   Nine of the girls had been locked in bare cells for more than a week; one girl had been locked in a bare cell for 114 days.
The conditions we observed in the SIU are particularly inhumane.
The cells are extremely hot with inadequate ventilation.   Some girls are naked in a dark room where they must urinate and defecate in a hole that they cannot flush.
Punched and slapped as punishment for being re-committed

Homeless Families on the Rise, with No End in Sight
by Pat Eaton-Robb
Homeless shelter
About 1,800 homeless families were in Massachusetts shelters last week — up from 1,400 in June 2006 and just under 1,200 in June 2005, according to state figures.
There are more families in shelters now than at any time since the inception of the state’s family shelter program in 1983, according to the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.
State officials blame a wide range of problems — from cuts in assistance to the recent housing crisis.
“We’re very concerned that this is going to keep going,” said Julia Kehoe, commissioner of the state Department of Transitional Assistance.
Few states keep government records of number of homeless families in shelters
Massachusetts is one of the few states that keep government records of the number of homeless families in shelters because state law requires the commonwealth to shelter any family that meets income and other guidelines.
The state keeps a daily count to show how many beds it needs, said Robyn Frost, executive director of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.
Nationally, the picture is much less clear.
Data from the Department of Housing and Urban Development suggests there about 750,000 homeless in the nation on any given night, with about 40 percent of those members of homeless families, said Philip Mangano, director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness.
Up to 26,500 Washingtonians are without a home or safe place to sleep on any given night, according to recent estimates.
Families with children fastest-growing segment of the homeless population
Families with children are the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population nationwide and make up nearly half of all people staying in King County homeless shelters.
The overall number of homeless people is up from a few years ago, Mangano said, but nobody can pinpoint an exact number of families because reporting requirements vary widely from state to state.
“Our desire would be to have many more states step up and track the data,” Mangano said.
“Research and data, that’s what should drive the resources that we make available.   Instead it’s often anecdote, conjecture and hearsay that does that.”
Kehoe attributes the increase in Massachusetts to a convergence of low wages, high housing costs, an increase in housing foreclosures and cuts in federal and state housing assistance programs.
Two years ago, lawmakers also lowered the financial eligibility requirements to qualify for homeless benefits from the poverty level to those making 130 percent of what would be considered a poverty wage, she said.
Works on math homework
“I think what we are seeing here is a perfect storm,” she said.
“Until we have some investment in affordable housing, and some flexibility in using our resources, we’re not going to see a leveling off of these numbers.”

Dragonfly or Insect Spy?

"I heard someone say, 'Oh my god, look at those,' " the college senior from New York recalled.   "I look up and I'm like, 'What the hell is that?'   They looked kind of like dragonflies or little helicopters.   But I mean, those are not insects."
Out in the crowd, Bernard Crane saw them, too.
"I'd never seen anything like it in my life," the Washington lawyer said. "They were large for dragonflies. I thought, 'Is that mechanical, or is that alive?' "
That is just one of the questions hovering over a handful of similar sightings at political events in Washington and New York. Some suspect the insectlike drones are high-tech surveillance tools, perhaps deployed by the Department of Homeland Security.
Others think they are, well, dragonflies — an ancient order of insects that even biologists concede look about as robotic as a living creature can look.
No agency admits to having deployed insect-size spy drones.
But a number of U.S. government and private entities acknowledge they are trying.
Some federally funded teams are even growing live insects with computer chips in them, with the goal of mounting spyware on their bodies and controlling their flight muscles remotely.

The robobugs could follow suspects, guide missiles to targets or navigate the crannies of collapsed buildings to find survivors.
The technical challenges of creating robotic insects are daunting, and most experts doubt that fully working models exist yet.
"If you find something, let me know," said Gary Anderson of the Defense Department's Rapid Reaction Technology Office.
But the CIA secretly developed a simple dragonfly snooper as long ago as the 1970s.
And given recent advances, even skeptics say there is always a chance that some agency has quietly managed to make something operational.
"America can be pretty sneaky," said Tom Ehrhard, a retired Air Force colonel and expert in unmanned aerial vehicles who is now at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, a nonprofit Washington-based research institute.
Robotic fliers used by military since World War II
Robotic fliers have been used by the military since World War II, but in the past decade their numbers and level of sophistication have increased enormously.
Defense Department documents describe nearly 100 different models in use today, some as tiny as birds, and some the size of small planes.
All told, the nation's fleet of flying robots logged more than 160,000 flight hours last year — a more than fourfold increase since 2003.
A recent report by the U.S.
Army Command and General Staff College warned that if traffic rules are not clarified soon, the glut of unmanned vehicles "could render military airspace chaotic and potentially dangerous."
But getting from bird size to bug size is not a simple matter of making everything smaller.
"You can't make a conventional robot of metal and ball bearings and just shrink the design down," said Ronald Fearing, a roboticist at the University of California at Berkeley.
For one thing, the rules of aerodynamics change at very tiny scales and require wings that flap in precise ways — a huge engineering challenge.
Only recently have scientists come to understand how insects fly — a biomechanical feat that, despite the evidence before scientists' eyes, was for decades deemed "theoretically impossible."
Just last month, researchers at Cornell University published a physics paper clarifying how dragonflies adjust the relative motions of their front and rear wings to save energy while hovering.
That kind of finding is important to roboticists because flapping fliers tend to be energy hogs, and batteries are heavy.
The CIA was among the earliest to tackle the problem.
The "insectothopter," developed by the agency's Office of Research and Development 30 years ago, looked just like a dragonfly and contained a tiny gasoline engine to make the four wings flap.
It flew but was ultimately declared a failure because it could not handle crosswinds.
Agency spokesman George Little said he could not talk about what the CIA may have done since then.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service also declined to discuss the topic.
Only the FBI offered a declarative denial. "We don't have anything like that," a spokesman said.
The Defense Department is trying, though.
In one approach, researchers funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are inserting computer chips into moth pupae — the intermediate stage between a caterpillar and a flying adult — and hatching them into healthy "cyborg moths."
The Hybrid Insect Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems project aims to create literal shutterbugs — camera-toting insects whose nerves have grown into their internal silicon chip so that wranglers can control their activities. DARPA researchers are also raising cyborg beetles with power for various instruments to be generated by their muscles.
Using Gandalf's beautiful contact with a moth to spin this Orwellian evil
"You might recall that Gandalf the friendly wizard in the recent classic 'Lord of the Rings' used a moth to call in air support," DARPA program manager Amit Lal said at a symposium in August. Today, he said, "this science fiction vision is within the realm of reality."
A DARPA spokeswoman denied a reporter's request to interview Lal or others on the project.
The cyborg insect project has its share of doubters.
"I'll be seriously dead before that program deploys," said vice admiral Joe Dyer, former commander of the Naval Air Systems Command, now at iRobot in Burlington, Mass., which makes household and military robots.
By contrast, fully mechanical micro-fliers are advancing quickly.
Researchers at the California Institute of Technology have made a "microbat ornithopter" that flies freely and fits in the palm of one's hand. A Vanderbilt University team has made a similar device.
With their sail-like wings, neither of those would be mistaken for insects. In July, however, a Harvard University team got a truly fly-like robot airborne, its synthetic wings buzzing at 120 beats per second.
"It showed that we can manufacture the articulated, high-speed structures that you need to re-create the complex wing motions that insects produce," said team leader Robert Wood.
The fly's vanishingly thin materials were machined with lasers, then folded into three-dimensional form "like a micro-origami," he said.
Alternating electric fields make the wings flap. The whole thing weighs just 65 milligrams, or a little more than the plastic head of a push pin.
Still, it can fly only while attached to a threadlike tether that supplies power, evidence that significant hurdles remain.
In August, at the International Symposium on Flying Insects and Robots, held in Switzerland, Japanese researchers introduced radio-controlled fliers with four-inch wingspans that resemble hawk moths.
Feel something of 'living souls.'
Those who watch them fly, its creator wrote in the program, "feel something of 'living souls.' "
Others, taking a tip from the CIA, are making fliers that run on chemical fuels instead of batteries.
The "entomopter," in early stages of development at the Georgia Institute of Technology and resembling a toy plane more than a bug, converts liquid fuel into a hot gas, which powers four flapping wings and ancillary equipment. ad_icon
"You can get more energy out of a drop of gasoline than out of a battery the size of a drop of gasoline," said team leader Robert Michelson.
Even if the technical hurdles are overcome, insect-size fliers will always be risky investments.
"They can get eaten by a bird, they can get caught in a spider web," said Fearing of Berkeley.   "No matter how smart you are — you can put a Pentium in there — if a bird comes at you at 30 miles per hour there's nothing you can do about it."
Protesters might even nab one with a net — one of many reasons why Ehrhard, the former Air Force colonel, and other experts said they doubted that the hovering bugs spotted in Washington were spies.
So what was seen by Crane, Alarcon and a handful of others at the D.C. march — and as far back as 2004, during the Republican National Convention in New York, when one observant but perhaps paranoid peace-march participant described on the Web "a jet-black dragonfly hovering about 10 feet off the ground, precisely in the middle of 7th avenue . . . watching us"?
They probably saw dragonflies, said Jerry Louton, an entomologist at the National Museum of Natural History. Washington is home to some large, spectacularly adorned dragonflies that "can knock your socks off," he said.
At the same time, he added, some details do not make sense. Three people at the D.C. event independently described a row of spheres, the size of small berries, attached along the tails of the big dragonflies — an accoutrement that Louton could not explain. And all reported seeing at least three maneuvering in unison.
"Dragonflies never fly in a pack," he said.
Mara Verheyden-Hilliard of the Partnership for Civil Justice said her group is investigating witness reports and has filed Freedom of Information Act requests with several federal agencies.
If such devices are being used to spy on political activists, she said, "it would be a significant violation of people's civil rights."
For many roboticists still struggling to get off the ground, however, that concern — and their technology's potential role — seems superfluous.
"I don't want people to get paranoid, but what can I say?" Fearing said.   "Cellphone cameras are already everywhere.   It's not that much different."

The most stupid question I could ask?
Does a bug have the right to control its own body?
No!
You Sure?
Isn't there a dignity inherent within a living creature.
Livingness, independence, existence, does this not belong to them.
Remote controlled rats — remote controlled devices inside their brains — is this not evil?
But then to some, we are a bug!
We are a rat!
Can we protest when we find this happening to us?
'But you do it,' they — think external, think off-planet — say.
'We are only experimenting.'
'We want to find out how to control you!
'Isn't this what you do?'
'Do you give those others on your planet an inherent dignity?'
'Isn't this that we do, the same exactly as your scientists, as your governments do?'
No longer in control of its body
Causing a living creature to sit immobile, unable for even its wings to move a fraction, for endless periods of time.
Isn't this a violation of a core, spiritual basis of life — to allow others their body?

Oxford University
Torture factory for animals
The story so far:
At the beginning of 2004, Oxford University claimed that the site on South Parks Rd was to be an 'Animal Hotel'.
They said that "no experiments would be carried out there and there would be no primates".
These statements were to mark the start of a series of lies and misinformation that has proven to be the norm for Oxford University.
Oxford University later issued a statement which contradicted their initial claims, finally admitting that "the facility will be used to experiment on animals".
Oxford University believes it has no reason to inform the outside world about the nature of animal experiments carried out within its facilities.
A closer look at their research on animals at the university reveals exactly why they are so desperate to keep the lid on the new lab.
An experiment published in Nature in 2002 described how ten week old kittens had one eye sewn together and had a part of their skull removed to expose the brain.
In 2003 another published paper highlights the long-term nature of animal suffering inside Oxford University. artificially produced brain damage.
Artificially produced brain damage
Three Rhesus Macaque monkeys with artificially produced brain damage were subjected to a variety of tests. artificially produced brain damage Two of the monkeys involved in this experiement had part of their brains removed ten years previously whey they were five years old.
A leading Oxford Professor claimed that the monkeys experimented on lived "the life of Riley" and that "there was no pain or stress."
These words are from a researcher who has routinely inflicted brain damage on highly intelligent and sensitive creatures and who's own published papers describe how after on experiment the monkeys required 'intensive nursing' to keep them alive.
Oxford University has sought to impose a draconian injunction on those involved in a legal and peaceful campaign against the new animal lab on South Park Rd in order to stop them highlighting the lies told by the University.
'Asset'
The London Times newspaper reported that police had investigated a case of cruelty against a leading professor at Oxford University.
The article stated that the professor had refused to have a monkey that was suffering put out of its misery because he described it as an 'asset'.
This intransigence persisted despite please from the university's own vet to end the animal's suffering.
It was only after a direct intervention by the Home Office that this poor creature's torment was ended.

Jennifer Flynn visits a building being renovated to become permanent housing for homeless families living with AIDS.

Picture: Forest Payne
Jennifer Flynn is not a rabble-rouser.   She’s not an aspiring suicide bomber.   She doesn’t advocate the overthrow of the government.   Instead, she pushes for funding and better treatment for people with HIV and AIDS.
Better keep an eye on her.
Wait! Somebody already did.
On the day before a rally by the New York City AIDS Housing Network at the 2004 Republican National Convention — a rally by an organization Flynn co-founded, and a rally that the NYPD had approved — she experienced something straight out of a spy novel.
While visiting her family in Hillside, N.J., Flynn spotted a car with a New York license plate parked outside the house.   When she left to head back to her Brooklyn home that evening, the car followed hers.   Shortly after leaving Hillside, two more vehicles, also with New York plates, seemed to be tailing her, too.
Trying to assure herself she wasn’t nuts, Flynn tested her hunch — changing lanes, making turns, pulling over and parking.   The drivers in those three vehicles mimicked her actions.
At one point, she recalled, she slowed down and one of the other vehicles ended up alongside her car.   She looked over to see several men in the vehicle.   She gestured toward them.   The men “threw up their arms as if to say, ‘We’re only doing what we’re told,’” she remembers.
On the New Jersey side of the Goethals Bridge, her followers pulled away.   But later, when Flynn pulled up in front of her Flatbush home, she spotted another car, with two men inside, both with laptops.   At 4 a.m., they were still there.
Is Flynn paranoid? Well, she is now.   She did, however, jot down the license plate number of one of the vehicles in Jersey — a blue sport utility vehicle.   When a reporter asked for the number, Flynn couldn’t find it.   Recently, it was found in a file kept by Christopher Dunn, the civil liberties lawyer she called that day in a panic.
The license plate number traces back to a company — Pequot Inc. — and a post office box at an address far from the five boroughs.   Registering unmarked cars to post office boxes outside the city or to shell companies is a common practice of law enforcement agencies to shield undercover investigators.
The NYPD, however, says it didn’t follow Flynn that evening.   And the department’s Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence David Cohen has said no federal agency was involved in preconvention surveillance.
So who was following Flynn? And what, exactly, did they hope to learn about a woman the NYPD knew well, as it had been in regular communication with her about her organization’s rally?
The answer — well, part of it — is a 99-mile road trip from NYPD headquarters: uptown, into the Bronx, and onto I-87.   A quick switch onto the Saw Mill River Parkway, then the Taconic Parkway.   Fifty more miles to go, past the leaves turning color and the country club golf courses.   After that, it’s the winding roads of tony Millbrook, with its horse farms and vineyards.
At last, we’re in Amenia, population 1,115.   It’s so far from the city its dry cleaners actually clean horse blankets.
The street named on the license-plate printout exists, though the address doesn’t.   An auto-shop worker on the block suggests checking with the post office.   When Postmaster Bonnie Colgan and an assistant are shown the printout, they stop dead in their tracks.
There’s a Pequot Capital Management in midtown and a Pequot Construction in the Bronx.   But no Pequot Inc. in Amenia.
“That’s not a real company,” the assistant says.   “The people who used that box, they’re from New York.   They used to come here and get the mail, but not anymore.”
Colgan is tempted to elaborate, but doesn’t.
“I can’t because of the sensitive nature of the issue,” she says.
Back in the city, Flynn takes a seat at a Starbucks near City Hall and shakes her head.   She still feels as passionately about what she does as she did three years ago.   But she concedes the experience has taken its toll.
“I feel like I’ve stepped back, in a way,” she says.   “I feel I’m not as vocal as I was.   I’m still going to sign a petition.   I’m still going to organize a rally.   I do it.   But now I’m deathly afraid.”
Flynn, 35, may one day learn who was following her.   Activists have decried police tactics at the GOP convention — 1,806 arrests, protesters hemmed in with orange netting, people arrested and held for hours and hours in a West Side pier warehouse.   The New York Civil Liberties Union, which represents seven plaintiffs suing the city over their arrests, is pushing for the release of raw NYPD intelligence reports detailing police surveillance of activists and protest groups.
Flynn says the damage is done.   She sees it in the attitudes of other activists.   There’s less desire.   More trepidation.
“When you use scare tactics, you really are curbing our right to dissent against the government,” she said.   “The only thing this is serving to do is squash public dissent.   By going after the organizers of a rally, you really are sending a message — ‘Don’t hold a rally.’”

Police Brutality & Harassment Sweeps America & UK
An epidemic of violence and harassment is sweeping the two Western countries.
Police, trained that the general public are the enemy, now understand they can engage in outright brutality without recourse.
Taser deaths are skyrocketing because the police have been ordered to use "pain compliance", otherwise known as torture, to subdue and oppress the citizenry.

The supremacy of the central banking-warfare investment model that has ruled our planet for the last 500 years depends on being able to combine the high margin profits of organized crime with the low cost of capital and liquidity that comes with governmental authority and popular faith in the rule of law.
US air strike in Baghdad kills 14
At least 14 people killed, nine wounded, in US air strike attack
Our economy depends on insiders having their cake and eating it too and subsidizing a free lunch by stealing from someone else.
This works well when the general population shares in some of the subsidy, grows complacent and does not see the “real deal” on how the system works.
However, liquidity and governmental authority will erode if the general population becomes aware of how things really work.
As this happens, they begin to understand the power of innovative technology and re-engineering of government resources to create greater abundance both for themselves and other people.
As this happens, they lose faith in the myth that the current system is fundamentally legitimate.
This jeopardizes the financial markets that depend on fraudulent collateral and practices to continue to work.
It also jeopardizes the wealth and power of the people who are winning with financial fraud.
... As a consequence, extraordinary attention and sums of money are invested in affirming the myth and appearance of legitimacy.
This includes creating popular explanations of why the rich and powerful are lawful and ethical and the venal poor, hostile foreigners, crafty mobsters and incompetent and irresponsible middle class bureaucrats are to blame for the success of narcotics trafficking, financial fraud and other forms of organized crime.

Our efforts at The Hamilton Securities Group to help HUD achieve maximum return on the sale of its defaulted mortgage assets coincided with a widespread process of “privatization” in which assets were, in fact, being transferred out of governments worldwide at significantly below market value in a manner providing extraordinary windfall profits, capital gains and financial equity to private corporations and investors.
US air strike in Baghdad kills 14
At least 14 people killed, nine wounded, in US air strike attack
In addition, government functions were being outsourced at prices way above what should have been market price or government costs — again stripping governmental and community resources in a manner that subsidized private interests.
The financial equity gained by private interests was often the result of financial, human, environmental and living equity stripped and stolen from communities — often without communities being able to understand what had happened or to clearly identify their loss.
This is why I now refer to privatization as “piratization.”

Over time I was increasingly shocked by the speed and ease with which many intelligent and seemingly competent members of the CFR [ Council on Foreign Relations ] appeared to eagerly justify policies and actions that supported growing corruption.
The regularity with which many CFR members would protect insiders from accountability regarding another appalling fraud surprised even me.
Many of them seemed delighted with the advantages of being an insider while being entirely indifferent to the extraordinary cost to all citizens of having our lives, health and resources drained to increase insider wealth in a manner that violated the most basic principles of fiduciary obligation and respect for the law.
In short, the CFR was operating in a win-lose economic paradigm that centralized economic and political power.
I was trying to find a way for us to shift to a win-win economic paradigm that was — by its nature — decentralizing.

The reader can appreciate why Wall Street would welcome someone as accommodating as Gorelick at Fannie Mae.
This was a period when the profits rolled in from engineering the most spectacular growth in mortgage debt in U.S. history.
As one real estate broker said, “They have turned our homes into ATM machines.”
Fannie Mae has been a leading player in centralizing control of the mortgage markets into Washington D.C. and Wall Street.
And that means as people were rounded up and shipped to prison as part of Operation Safe Home, Fannie was right behind to finance the gentrification of neighborhoods.
And that is before we ask questions about the extent to which the estimated annual financial flows of $500 billion–$1 trillion money laundering through the U.S. financial system or money missing from the US government are reinvested into Fannie Mae securities.

James Forrestal
James Forrestal’s oil portrait always hung prominently in one of the private Dillon Read dining rooms for the eleven years that I worked at the firm. Forrestal, a highly regarded Dillon partner and President of the firm, had gone to Washington, D.C. in 1940 to lead the Navy during WWII and then played a critical role in creating the National Security Act of 1947.

He then became Secretary of War (later termed Secretary of Defense) in September 1947 and served until March 28, 1949.

Given the central banking-warfare investment model that rules our planet, it was appropriate that Dillon
partners at various times lead both the Treasury Department and the Defense Department.

Shortly after resigning from government, Forrestal died falling out of a window of the Bethesda Naval Hospital outside of Washington, D.C. on May 22, 1949.

There is some controversy around the official explanation of his death — ruled a suicide.

Some insist he had a nervous breakdown. Some say that he was opposed to the creation of the state of Israel.

Others say that he argued for transparency and accountability in government, and against the provisions instituted at this time to create a secrete “black budget.”

He lost and was pretty upset about it — and the loss was a violent one.

Since the professional killers who operate inside the Washington beltway have numerous techniques to get perfectly sane people to kill themselves, I am not sure it makes a big difference.

Approximately a month later, the CIA Act of 1949 was passed.

The Act created the CIA and endowed it with the statutory authority that became one of the chief components of financing the “black” budget — the power to claw monies from other agencies for the benefit of secretly funding the intelligence communities and their corporate contractors.

This was to turn out to be a devastating development for the forces of transparency, without which there can be no rule of law, free markets or democracy.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt appointed Forrestal as an administrative assistant on June 22, 1940, then nominated him as Undersecretary of the Navy six weeks later. In the latter post, Forrestal would prove to be very effective at mobilizing industrial production for the war effort.
He became Secretary of the Navy on May 19, 1944, following the death of his immediate supervisor Frank Knox from a heart attack. Forrestal then led the Navy through the closing year of the war and the demobilization that followed.   What might have been his greatest legacy as Navy Secretary was an attempt that came to nought.   He, along with Secretary of War Henry Stimson and Under Secretary of State Joseph Grew, in the early months of 1945, strongly advocated a softer policy toward Japan that would permit a negotiated face-saving surrender.   His primary concern was "the menace of Russian Communism and its attraction for decimated, destabilized societies in Europe and Asia", and, therefore, keeping the Soviet Union out of the war with Japan.   Had his advice been followed, Japan might well have surrendered before August 1945, precluding the use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.   So strongly did he feel about this matter that he cultivated negotiation attempts that bordered closely on insubordination toward the President.
Forrestal opposed the unification of the services, but even so helped develop the National Security Act of 1947 that created the National Military Establishment (the Department of Defense was not created as such until August 1949), and with the former Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson retiring to private life, Forrestal was the next choice.
His 18 months at Defense came at an exceptionally difficult time for the U.S. military establishment:   Communist governments came to power in Czechoslovakia and China; West Berlin was blockaded, necessitating the Berlin Airlift to keep it going; the war between the Arab states and Israel after the establishment of Israel in Palestine; and negotiations were going on for the formation of NATO.   His reign was also hampered by intense interservice rivalries.
In addition, President Harry Truman constrained military budgets billions of dollars below what the services were requesting, putting Forrestal in the middle of the tug-of-war.   Forrestal was also becoming more and more worried about the Soviet threat.   Internationally, the takeover by the Communists of Eastern Europe, their threats to the governments of Greece, Italy, and France, their impending takeover of China, and the invasion of South Korea by North Korea would demonstrate the legitimacy of his concerns on the international front as well.

What Briody does not mention is allegations regarding Brown & Root's involvement in narcotics trafficking. Former LAPD narcotics investigator Mike Ruppert once described his break up with fiance Teddy — an agent dealing narcotics and weapons for the CIA while working with Brown & Root, as follows:
“Arriving in New Orleans in early July, 1977 I found her living in an apartment across the river in Gretna. Equipped with scrambler phones, night vision devices and working from sealed communiqués delivered by naval and air force personnel from nearby Belle Chasse Naval Air Station, Teddy was involved in something truly ugly.
She was arranging for large quantities of weapons to be loaded onto ships leaving for Iran.
At the same time she was working with Mafia associates of New Orleans Mafia boss Carlos Marcello to coordinate the movement of service boats that were bringing large quantities of heroin into the city.
The boats arrived at Marcello controlled docks, unmolested by even the New Orleans police she introduced me to, along with divers, military men, former Green Berets and CIA personnel.
“The service boats were retrieving the heroin from oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, oil rigs in international waters, oil rigs built and serviced by Brown and Root.
The guns that Teddy monitored, apparently Vietnam era surplus AK 47s and M16s, were being loaded onto ships also owned or leased by Brown and Root.
And more than once during the eight days I spent in New Orleans I met and ate at restaurants with Brown and Root employees who were boarding those ships and leaving for Iran within days.
Once, while leaving a bar and apparently having asked the wrong question, I was shot at in an attempt to scare me off.”

The Clinton Administration took the groundwork laid by Nixon, Reagan and Bush and embraced and blossomed the expansion and promotion of federal support for police, enforcement and the War on Drugs with a passion that was hard to understand unless and until you realized that the American financial system was deeply dependent on attracting an estimated $500 billion-$1 trillion of annual money laundering.
Globalizing corporations and deepening deficits and housing bubbles required attracting vast amounts of capital.
Attracting capital also required making the world safe for the reinvestment of the profits of organized crime and the war machine.
Without growing organized crime and military activities through government budgets and contracts, the economy would stop centralizing.
The Clinton Administration was to govern a doubling of the federal prison population.

UCLA Police Taser Student For Not Showing ID
This is like something out of a horror movie, you can hear the guy screaming and begging not to be tortured as they repeatedly hit him with the Taser shot.
Tortured for not showing ID in America, this is what 'serve and protect' has come to mean.
The UCLA student was hit with the Taser shocks multiple times while he was in the Powell Library Computer Lab.
The six-minute video shows Mostafa Tabatabainejad audibly screaming in pain as he is stunned several times with a Taser, each time for three to five seconds.
He is told repeatedly to stand up and stop fighting, and is told that if he does not do so he will "get Tased again."
Mostafa is also stunned with the Taser when he is already handcuffed, says Carlos Zaragoza, a third-year English and history student who witnessed the incident.   "No possible danger to any of the police — getting shocked and Tasered as he is handcuffed."
As Tabatabainejad is being dragged through the room by the two officers, he repeats in a strained scream, "I'm not fighting you.   I said I would leave."
The officers used the 'drive stun' setting in the Taser.   Tasers deliver volts of low-amperage energy to the body, causing a disruption of the body's electrical energy pulses and locking the muscles.
The Lancet Medical Journal in 2001 states a charge of three to five seconds can result in immobilization for five to 15 minutes.   Mostafa would have been physically unable to stand when the officers demanded that he do so.
"It is a real mistake to treat a Taser as some benign thing that painlessly brings people under control.   The Taser can be incredibly violent and result in death" — Peter Eliasberg, managing attorney at the ACLU of Southern California.
Mostafa Tabatabainejad was walking with his backpack toward the door when he was approached by two UCPD officers, one of whom grabbed the student's arm.
In response, Mostafa yelled at the officers to "get off me."   Following this demand, Tabatabainejad was stunned with the Taser.
The incident of police violence left many students disturbed.
UCLA administration said that the police were doing nothing wrong.   In so many words they were accepting that to Taser a student for forgetting his BruinCard was quite appropriate, if he or she responds as Mostafa did.
Well UCLA student? ? ?   You're paying for these people.
Is this the kind of University you want to attend?
Is the Taser [torturing] of a fellow student acceptable to you?
Is this the kind of world in which you wish to live?
Well UCLA faculty? ? ?   Is this an environment where you want to teach?
Is the Taser [torturing] of a student acceptable to you?
Is this the kind of world you have grown to admire?
Me?   Oh! I only have disgust.

Alex Jones:
They've already shocked him once.   By the time they've shocked him once they get the camera on.
Thirty seconds more they shock him again...and...and between the last ones it's more like fifteen seconds.
Did you hear the guy screaming, and then immediately they say stand up, stand up.
Fifteen seconds later [screaming] and you hear the people around him yell at the cops.
'He can't get up.   He can't get up.   Look at him.'
The guy is on the ground flopping around and...and...and...yeh...yeh...ahhhhh...ahhhhh...ahhhhhhhhhh.
The cops... they're they're...the guy can't get up...
It's just like some movie with the psychopath going...now it's okay...now I'm going to start cutting you.
This is what torture is.
I've seen so many [other videos] where you see the cops up close while they're Tasering and they'll start like setting their jaws, the creamy eye in their look...mmmmmmmm...eeeeehhhhhhhh...baring their teeth.   It's fun...it's fun...oh! look he [she] can't get up...I'll say get up because that will cover me [Taser — person being shocked again] mmmmmmm...mmmmmm... and then he [or she] waits fifteen seconds...I told you get up...just get up...mmmmmm [Taser — person being shocked again]    Ahhh!!   ahhhh!!!    [More screams from the person on the ground]
And it goes on and on and on and finally — it was no more fun because he [or she] totally passed out.
But don't worry CIA torture is more scientific.
They give people adrenaline to wake them back up.
Just think — all the TV shows promote torture and stuff maybe cops can.....
For people's own gooddddddddd.
To maintain order....
Yeah!!!!

The most famous man on the Internet this week, University of Florida student Andrew Meyer, is, according to a friend speaking on "The Alex Jones Show," a 9/11 truther.
He's more than that, he's an honest-to-goodness truthseeker who is unafraid to speak truth to power, as the tired old bumper sticker says.
Anyway, the friend said Meyer, who was Tasered by campus police while questioning US Sen. John Kerry, was trying to ask Kerry if he was a member of the Yale secret society Skull & Bones, wants to be a journalist and wants to know the truth.
But when Meyer had the gall to be direct and to demand his right to ask some questions regarding the rigged '04 election, the cops act like bulls in front of a matador waving a red cape.
This incident is a total outrage! Meyer did nothing illegal.
He was assaulted by the police and sent to jail for daring to confront a sitting U.S. senator.
It's totally unbelievable.
Sure, he may be a prankster, but according to Meyer's website,
www.theandrewmeyer.com , he is a bold individual with a sense of humor and a love of pop culture.
He's also an informed young man and any and all charges should be dropped.
In the meantime, it's time to ban Tasers at the University of Florida, particularly when you have cops with gangland tattoos attacking students for using their first amendment rights.
Those cops should be fired for infringing on Meyer's right to speak.
Time to end this "like sheep to slaughter" mentality
It's time to end this "like sheep to slaughter" mentality that is so rife here in America.
It's time to stand up to corrupt "authority figures" who think they can wield their power over us and use torture devices to make us comply.

Woman jailed for 'neglected' lawn
Map of where 70 year old woman states she was attacked by police and jailed for having a neglected lawn
A 70-year-old US woman has been left bruised and bloody after an unexpected clash with police who came to arrest her because her lawn was dry and brown.
Trouble flared when Utah pensioner Betty Perry, 70, refused to give her name to an officer trying to caution her for not watering her lawn.
She says the officer hit her with handcuffs, cutting her nose, although police insist she slipped and fell.
Ms Perry said she was "distraught" after the incident.
She denied that she was resisting arrest, maintaining that she turned to go inside to call her son to fix the confusing dispute.
"I tried to sit down and get away from him," she told Utah newspaper the Daily Herald.
"I don't know what he's doing.   I said: 'What are you doing?'   And he hit me with those handcuffs in my face," she said.
"He's just trying to cover his tracks, as far as I'm concerned."
Set free
The officer had judged that Ms Perry's "sadly neglected and dying landscape" breached an Orem city guideline and was attempting to issue a formal caution when the 70-year-old was injured.
She was treated in a local hospital for the cut to her nose and for other bruises before being taken to jail.

But she was let go when police realised there were "other ways" of finding out her identity without taking her to jail, a police spokesman said.
The arresting officer has not been named but has been placed on administrative leave, he added.
Ms Perry, who says she has never had a run-in with police in the past, has been offered help by local church leaders to clean up her garden.
"I'm very distraught over all this," she said.
"I can't believe this happened.     Do you ever just wish you could start your day over and it would all be different?"

“Generally in wars, total casualties, which include wounded, crippled, and lost, are many times the number killed, often as high as ten times.
So while Americans, thirty years later, still weep at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington — a monument representing about sixty thousand deaths over ten years of war — they have inflicted on Iraq, in just three weeks, that same proportionate loss — all of them civilians.
With Iraq‘s population being less than ten percent that of the United States, such losses must be multiplied by ten to get some feel for their impact on the society.
Is this how a great power behaves in the early part of the 21st century?
Especially a power that enjoys reminding us at every opportunity — I suppose because it is so easy for the rest of the world, just watching its actions, to forget — that America stands for human rights and democratic principles?”

New study from Pilots for 9/11 Truth:

New study from Pilots for 9/11 Truth:

No Boeing 757 hit the Pentagon
Thu Jun 21, 3:01 AM ET
Pilots for 9/11 Truth obtained black box data from the government under the Freedom of Information Act for AA Flight 77, which The 9/11 Report claims hit the Pentagon.
Analysis of the data contradicts the official account in direction, approach, and altitude.
The plane was too high to hit lamp posts and would have flown over the Pentagon, not impacted with its ground floor.
This result confirms and strengthens the previous findings of Scholars for 9/11 Truth that no Boeing 757 hit the buillding.
Madison, WI (PRWEB) June 21, 2007 - A study of the black box data provided by the government to Pilots for 9/11 Truth has confirmed the previous findings of Scholars for 9/11 Truth that no Boeing 757 hit the Pentagon on 9/11.
"We have had four lines of proof that no Boeing 757 hit the building," said James Fetzer, founder of Scholars for 9/11 Truth.
"This new study by Pilots drives another nail into a coffin of lies told the American people by The 9/11 Commission":
The new society, an international organization of pilots and aviation professionals, petitioned the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) under the Freedom of Information Act and obtained its 2002 report on American Airlines Flight 77.
A Boeing 757 that, according to the official account, hit the ground floor of the Pentagon after it skimmed over the lawn at 500 mph plus, taking out a series of lamp posts in the process.
The pilots not only obtained the flight data but created a computer animation to demonstrate what it told them.
According to the report issued by Pilots for 9/11 Truth (
http://pilotsfor911truth.org/ ), there are major differences between the official account and the flight data:
a. The NTSB Flight Path Animation approach path and altitude does not support official events.
b. All Altitude data shows the aircraft at least 300 feet too high to have struck the light poles.
c. The rate of descent data is in direct conflict with the aircraft being able to impact the light poles and be captured in the Dept of Defense "5 Frames" video of an object traveling nearly parallel with the Pentagon lawn.
d. The record of data stops at least one second prior to official impact time.
e. If data trends are continued, the aircraft altitude would have been at least 100 feet too high to have hit the Pentagon.
As Robert Balsamo, co-founder of Pilots for 9/11 Truth, observes:
"The information in the NSTB documents does not support, and in some instances factually contradicts, the official government position that American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon on the morning of September 11, 2001."
The study was signed by fifteen professional pilots with extensive military and commercial carrier experience.
They have made their animation, "Pandora's Box: Chapter 2," available to the public at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5zuoBLIbvM
According to James H. Fetzer, founder of Scholars for 9/11 Truth ( http://911scholars.org ), this result fits into the broader picture of what happened at the Pentagon that day.
"We have developed four lines of argument that prove — conclusively, in my judgment — that no Boeing 757 hit the building.
The most important evidence to the contrary has been the numerous eyewitness reports of a large commercial carrier coming toward the building.
If the NTSB data is correct, then the Pilot's study shows that a large aircraft headed toward the building but did not impact with it. It swerved off and flew above the Pentagon."
Fetzer, who retired last June after 35 years of teaching courses in logic, critical thinking, and scientific reasoning, expressed pleasure over the Pilot's results, which, he said, has neatly resolved the most pressing issue that remained about the Pentagon.
He added,
"We have previously developed several lines of argument, each of which proves that no Boeing 757 hit the building."
(1) The hit point at the Pentagon was too small to accommodate a 100-ton airliner with a 125-foot wingspan and a tail that stands 44 feet above the ground; the kind and quantity of debris was wrong for a Boeing 757: there were no wings, no fuselage, no seats, no bodies, no luggage, no tail!
Not even the engines were recovered, and they are practically indestructible.
(2) Of an estimate 84 videotapes of the crash, the three that have been released by the Pentagon do not show a Boeing 757 hitting the building, as even Bill O'Reilly admitted when one was shown on "The Factor".
At 155 feet, the plane was more than twice as long as the 77-foot Pentagon is high and should have been visible.
There are indications of a much smaller plane, but not a Boeing 757.
(3) Indeed, the aerodynamics of flight would have made the official trajectory — flying more than 500 mph barely above ground level — physically impossible, because of the accumulation of a massive pocket of compressed gas (air) beneath the fuselage; and if it had come it at an angle instead, it would have created a massive crater; but there is no crater and the official trajectory is impossible.
(4) Flying low enough to impact with the ground floor would have meant that the enormous engines were plowing the ground and creating massive furrows; but there are no massive furrows.
The smooth, unblemished surface of the Pentagon lawn thus stands as a "smoking gun" proving the official trajectory cannot be sustained.
Members of Scholars have contributed to a new book that analyses the government's official account, according to which 19 Islamic fundamentalists hijacked four commercial airliners, outfoxed the most sophisticated air-defense system in the world, and committed these atrocities under the control of a man in a cave in Afghanistan.
Entitled, THE 9/11 CONSPIRACY (2007), it includes photographs of the hit point before and after the upper floors collapsed, the crucial frame from the released videos, and views of the clear, smooth, and unblemished lawn.
"Don't be taken in by photos showing damage to the second floor or those taken after the upper floors collapsed, which happened 20-30 minutes later," Fetzer said.
"In fact, debris begins to show up on the completely clean lawn in short order, which might have been dropped from a C-130 that was circling above the Pentagon or placed there by men in suits who were photographed carrying debris with them."
The most striking is a piece from the fuselage of a commercial airliner, which is frequently adduced as evidence.
James Hanson, a newspaper reporter who earned his law degree from the University of Michigan College of Law, has traced that debris to an American Airlines 757 that crashed in a rain forest above Cali, Columbia in 1995.
"It was the kind of slow-speed crash that would have torn off paneling in this fashion, with no fires, leaving them largely intact."
Fetzer has been so impressed with his research he has invited Hanson to submit his study to Scholars for consideration for publication on its web site,
http://911scholars.org .
"The Pentagon has become a kind of litmus test for rationality in the study of 9/11," Fetzer said.
"Those who persist in maintaining that a Boeing 757 hit the building are either unfamiliar with the evidence or cognitively impaired.
Unless," he added, "they want to mislead the American people.   The evidence is beyond clear and compelling.   It places this issue 'beyond a reasonable doubt'.   No Boeing 757 hit the Pentagon."

Speculation Mounts That Browns Were Infiltrated, Tricked
Tax protesters arrested, but "did not surrender" according to reports, leading many to guess Ed and Elaine were taken by surprise and violently subdued before they could resist
Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
Friday, October 5, 2007
Speculation is rife that the Browns were infiltrated and tricked before being violently subdued as authorities refuse to provide any details behind their arrest beside the fact that they did not peacefully surrender.
Observers were both saddened and confused about the announcement of the arrest of tax protesters Ed and Elaine Brown last night.
Though none of us wanted to witness another Waco, we were all well aware of the fact that the Browns have stated on numerous occasions that they would not be arrested without a fight and would rather die than go to jail.
This prompted many to question how U.S. Marshals were able to seize the Browns with apparently little response, leading some to conclude that Ed and Elaine were tricked by one or more supporters whom they had taken into their confidence.
Posts on messageboards overnight feared that the Browns had been taken by surprise, violently subdued and probably shocked numerous times with Taser weapons before they even had a chance to resist.
The rumor mill is in high gear because officials have refused to provide any information regarding the details of the arrests, though a news conference is scheduled for 10am today.
All we know at this point is that the Browns were taken into custody after being seized by U.S. Marshals on their property at around 7:45pm last night.
Neighbors reported large convoys of SUV's approaching the property before the arrests.
"Grobe, a former patient of Elaine Brown, who used to run a dental practice, says he noticed "an unusual amount of traffic all of a sudden'' passing by the house last night.
He said he saw 30 to 40 cars passing by, but had no idea if it was authorities," states an AP report.
"Neither he nor neighbor Robert Carpenter said they heard anything unusual.   Carpenter said there were no marked cruisers, but a lot of large SUVs.   He said he called the Plainfield Police and they called back and said what was going on."
"We had no indication that the Browns intended to voluntarily surrender, so we had to move forward with an operation that promised the safest possible outcome. That day was today," U.S. Marshal Stephen Monier said in a written statement.
Though the arrests occurred "without incident" and no one was injured, Monier admitted that the Browns "did not surrender," meaning they were likely violently subdued against their will.
If an informant was used to facilitate the arrest, it would not be the first time such tactics have been employed.
In June, Ed Brown outed what he claimed was a Fed
who had tried to provoke the Browns into making outlandish statements and rash decisions as part of "psychological operations" on behalf of authorities.
This came shortly after an aborted raid on the Brown's property during which supporter Danny Riley was arrested and later authorities attempted to coerce Riley into becoming an informant
against the Browns.
Marshals also threatened Riley with 15 years in jail unless he lied to the media and told them that the botched raid was not an attempted siege.

US Income Gap Widening Significantly, Data Shows
Top 300,000 collectively taking as much money annually
as total annual incomes of 150 million Americans
Not seen since 1928 — shortly before Depression
Income inequality grew significantly in 2005, with the top 1 percent of Americans — those with incomes that year of more than $348,000 — receiving their largest share of national income since 1928, analysis of newly released tax data shows.
The top 10 percent, roughly those earning more than $100,000, also reached a level of income share not seen since before the Depression.
While total reported income in the United States increased almost 9 percent in 2005, the most recent year for which such data is available, average incomes for those in the bottom 90 percent dipped slightly compared with the year before, dropping $172, or 0.6 percent.
The gains went largely to the top 1 percent, whose incomes rose to an average of more than $1.1 million each, an increase of more than $139,000, or about 14 percent.
The new data also shows that the top 300,000 Americans collectively enjoyed almost as much income as the bottom 150 million Americans.
Per person, the top group received 440 times as much as the average person in the bottom half earned, nearly doubling the gap from 1980.

Giuliani, how do you sleep at night?

An intrepid group of Infowars reporters confronted Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani at a fundraiser he was attending in New York today to demand answers to unanswered questions surrounding the collapse of the three World Trade Center buildings on 9/11.
One activist, the relative of a firefighter killed in the collapses, asked the former NYC mayor, for an explanation as why no steel framed building in history has ever collapsed from fire damage except for on 9/11 and why people in the buildings including rescuers were not given warnings they were going to collapse when he was.
She then asked Giuliani "How do you sleep at night?"
Watch the video here
Previously Giuliani has previously admitted in interviews that he was given prior warning that the twin towers were going to collapse, something no one could possibly have known was going to happen. Yet firefighters and police were not given the same warnings.

US Economy Leaving Record Numbers in Severe Poverty
by Tony Pugh
The percentage of poor Americans who are living in severe poverty has reached a 32-year high, millions of working Americans are falling closer to the poverty line and the gulf between the nation's "haves" and "have-nots" continues to widen.
A McClatchy Newspapers analysis of 2005 census figures, the latest available, found that nearly 16 million Americans are living in deep or severe poverty.
A family of four with two children and an annual income of less than $9,903 — half the federal poverty line — was considered severely poor in 2005.   So were individuals who made less than $5,080 a year.
The McClatchy analysis found that the number of severely poor Americans grew by 26 percent from 2000 to 2005.
That's 56 percent faster than the overall poverty population grew in the same period.
McClatchy's review also found statistically significant increases in the percentage of the population in severe poverty in 65 of 215 large U.S. counties, and similar increases in 28 states.
The review also suggested that the rise in severely poor residents isn't confined to large urban counties but extends to suburban and rural areas.
The plight of the severely poor is a distressing sidebar to an unusual economic expansion.   Worker productivity has increased dramatically since the brief recession of 2001, but wages and job growth have lagged behind.   At the same time, the share of national income going to corporate profits has dwarfed the amount going to wages and salaries.   That helps explain why the median household income of working-age families, adjusted for inflation, has fallen for five straight years.
These and other factors have helped push 43 percent of the nation's 37 million poor people into deep poverty — the highest rate since at least 1975.
The share of poor Americans in deep poverty has climbed slowly but steadily over the last three decades.   But since 2000, the number of severely poor has grown "more than any other segment of the population," according to a recent study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
"That was the exact opposite of what we anticipated when we began," said Dr. Steven Woolf of Virginia Commonwealth University, who co-authored the study.
"We're not seeing as much moderate poverty as a proportion of the population.
What we're seeing is a dramatic growth of severe poverty."
The growth spurt, which leveled off in 2005, in part reflects how hard it is for low-skilled workers to earn their way out of poverty in an unstable job market that favors skilled and educated workers.
It also suggests that social programs aren't as effective as they once were at catching those who fall into economic despair.
About one in three severely poor people are under age 17, and nearly two out of three are female.
Female-headed families with children account for a large share of the severely poor.
Nearly two out of three people (10.3 million) in severe poverty are white, but blacks (4.3 million) and Hispanics of any race (3.7 million) make up disproportionate shares.
Blacks are nearly three times as likely as non-Hispanic whites to be in deep poverty, while Hispanics are roughly twice as likely.
Washington, D.C., the nation's capital, has a higher concentration of severely poor people — 10.8 percent in 2005 — than any of the 50 states, topping even hurricane-ravaged Mississippi and Louisiana, with 9.3 percent and 8.3 percent, respectively.
Nearly six of 10 poor District residents are in extreme poverty.
'I DON'T ASK FOR NOTHING'
A few miles from the Capitol Building, 60-year-old John Treece pondered his life in deep poverty as he left a local food pantry with two bags of free groceries.
Plagued by arthritis, back problems and myriad ailments from years of manual labor, Treece has been unable to work full time for 15 years.   He's tried unsuccessfully to get benefits from the Social Security Administration, which he said disputes his injuries and work history.
In 2006, an extremely poor individual earned less than $5,244 a year, according to federal poverty guidelines.   Treece said he earned about that much in 2006 doing odd jobs.
Wearing shoes with holes, a tattered plaid jacket and a battered baseball cap, Treece lives hand-to-mouth in a $450-a-month room in a nondescript boarding house in a high-crime neighborhood.
Thanks to food stamps, the food pantry and help from relatives, Treece said he never goes hungry.   But toothpaste, soap, toilet paper and other items that require cash are tougher to come by.
"Sometimes it makes you want to do the wrong thing, you know," Treece said, referring to crime.   "But I ain't a kid no more.   I can't do no time.   At this point, I ain't got a lotta years left."
Treece remains positive and humble despite his circumstances.
"I don't ask for nothing," he said.   "I just thank the Lord for this day and ask that tomorrow be just as blessed."
Like Treece, many who did physical labor during their peak earning years have watched their job prospects dim as their bodies gave out.
David Jones, the president of the Community Service Society of New York City, an advocacy group for the poor, testified before the House Ways and Means Committee last month that he was shocked to discover how pervasive the problem was.
"You have this whole cohort of, particularly African-Americans of limited skills, men, who can't participate in the workforce because they don't have skills to do anything but heavy labor," he said.

That I joined the military and I had only one duty and that was to obey what I was told, regardless of how I felt inside.

It really hurt me for a long time because I imprisoned myself by telling myself I didn't have a choice.

It didn't matter that I might be sent to prison.

I was already in prison, my freedom was already gone.

When I told myself that I do have a choice, I have a choice to do what is morally right, what is in my conscience, and what I can live with for the rest of my life even though that comes with consequences, I do have that choice.

When I realized that, and when I chose what was right for me, I became free again.

And I think everybody has to remember that and to realize that is what is important in life.'

'A PERMANENT UNDERCLASS'
Severe poverty is worst near the Mexican border and in some areas of the South, where 6.5 million severely poor residents are struggling to find work as manufacturing jobs in the textile, apparel and furniture-making industries disappear. The Midwestern Rust Belt and areas of the Northeast also have been hard hit as economic restructuring and foreign competition have forced numerous plant closings.
At the same time, low-skilled immigrants with impoverished family members are increasingly drawn to the South and Midwest to work in the meatpacking, food processing and agricultural industries.
These and other factors such as increased fluctuations in family incomes and illegal immigration have helped push 43 percent of the nation's 37 million poor people into deep poverty - the highest rate in at least 32 years.
"What appears to be taking place is that, over the long term, you have a significant permanent underclass that is not being impacted by anti-poverty policies," said Michael Tanner, the director of Health and Welfare Studies at the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank.
Arloc Sherman, a senior researcher at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal think tank, disagreed.
"It doesn't look like a growing permanent underclass," said Sherman, whose organization has chronicled the growth of deep poverty.
"What you see in the data are more and more single moms with children who lose their jobs and who aren't being caught by a safety net anymore."
About 1.1 million such families account for roughly 2.1 million deeply poor children, Sherman said.
After fleeing an abusive marriage in 2002, 42-year-old Marjorie Sant moved with her three children from Arkansas to a seedy boarding house in Raleigh, N.C., where the four shared one bedroom.
For most of 2005, they lived off food stamps and the $300 a month in Social Security Disability Income for her son with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Teachers offered clothes to Sant's children.
Saturdays meant lunch at the Salvation Army.
"To depend on other people to feed and clothe your kids is horrible," Sant said. "I found myself in a hole and didn't know how to get out."
In the summer of 2005, social workers warned that she'd lose her children if her home situation didn't change. Sant then brought her two youngest children to a temporary housing program at the Raleigh Rescue Mission while her oldest son moved to California to live with an adult daughter from a previous marriage.
So for 10 months, Sant learned basic office skills. She now lives in a rented house, works two jobs and earns about $20,400 a year
Sant is proud of where she is, but she knows that "if something went wrong, I could well be back to where I was."
'I'M GETTING NOWHERE FAST'
As more poor Americans sink into severe poverty, more individuals and families living within $8,000 above or below the poverty line also have seen their incomes decline. Steven Woolf of Virginia Commonwealth University attributes this to what he calls a "sinkhole effect" on income.
"Just as a sinkhole causes everything above it to collapse downward, families and individuals in the middle and upper classes appear to be migrating to lower-income tiers that bring them closer to the poverty threshold," Woolf wrote in the study.
Before Hurricane Katrina, Rene Winn of Biloxi, Miss., earned $28,000 a year as an administrator for the Boys and Girls Club. But for 11 months in 2006, she couldn't find steady work and wouldn't take a fast-food job. As her opportunities dwindled, Winn's frustration grew.
"Some days I feel like the world is mine and I can create my own destiny," she said. "Other days I feel a desperate feeling. Like I gotta' hurry up. Like my career is at a stop. Like I'm getting nowhere fast. And that's not me because I've always been a positive person."
After relocating to New Jersey for 10 months after the storm, Winn returned to Biloxi in September because of medical and emotional problems with her son. She and her two youngest children moved into her sister's home along with her mother, who has Alzheimer's. With her sister, brother-in-law and their two children, eight people now share a three-bedroom home.
Winn said she recently took a job as a technician at the state health department. The hourly job pays $16,120 a year. That's enough to bring her out of severe poverty and just $122 shy of the $16,242 needed for a single mother with two children to escape poverty altogether under current federal guidelines.
Winn eventually wants to transfer to a higher-paying job, but she's thankful for her current position.
"I'm very independent and used to taking care of my own, so I don't like the fact that I have to depend on the state. I want to be able to do it myself."
The Census Bureau's Survey of Income and Program Participation shows that, in a given month, only 10 percent of severely poor Americans received Temporary Assistance for Needy Families in 2003 - the latest year available - and that only 36 percent received food stamps.
Many could have exhausted their eligibility for welfare or decided that the new program requirements were too onerous. But the low participation rates are troubling because the worst byproducts of poverty, such as higher crime and violence rates and poor health, nutrition and educational outcomes, are worse for those in deep poverty.
Over the last two decades, America has had the highest or near-highest poverty rates for children, individual adults and families among 31 developed countries, according to the Luxembourg Income Study, a 23-year project that compares poverty and income data from 31 industrial nations.
"It's shameful," said Timothy Smeeding, the former director of the study and the current head of the Center for Policy Research at Syracuse University. "We've been the worst performer every year since we've been doing this study."
With the exception of Mexico and Russia, the U.S. devotes the smallest portion of its gross domestic product to federal anti-poverty programs, and those programs are among the least effective at reducing poverty, the study found. Again, only Russia and Mexico do worse jobs.
One in three Americans will experience a full year of extreme poverty at some point in his or her adult life, according to long-term research by Mark Rank, a professor of social welfare at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
An estimated 58 percent of Americans between the ages of 20 and 75 will spend at least a year in poverty, Rank said. Two of three will use a public assistance program between ages 20 and 65, and 40 percent will do so for five years or more.
These estimates apply only to non-immigrants. If illegal immigrants were factored in, the numbers would be worse, Rank said.
"It would appear that for most Americans the question is no longer if, but rather when, they will experience poverty. In short, poverty has become a routine and unfortunate part of the American life course," Rank wrote in a recent study.
"Whether these patterns will continue throughout the first decade of 2000 and beyond is difficult to say ... but there is little reason to think that this trend will reverse itself any time soon."
'SOMETHING REAL AND TROUBLING'
Most researchers and economists say federal poverty estimates are a poor tool to gauge the complexity of poverty. The numbers don't factor in assistance from government anti-poverty programs, such as food stamps, housing subsidies and the Earned Income Tax Credit, all of which increase incomes and help pull people out of poverty.
But federal poverty measures also exclude work-related expenses and necessities such as day care, transportation, housing and health care costs, which eat up large portions of disposable income, particularly for low-income families.
Alternative poverty measures that account for these shortcomings typically inflate or deflate official poverty statistics. But many of those alternative measures show the same kind of long-term trends as the official poverty data.
Robert Rector, a senior researcher with the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, questioned the growth of severe poverty, saying that census data become less accurate farther down the income ladder. He said many poor people, particularly single mothers with boyfriends, underreport their income by not including cash gifts and loans. Rector said he's seen no data that suggest increasing deprivation among the very poor.
Arloc Sherman of the liberal Center on Budget and Policy Priorities argues that the growing number of severely poor is an indisputable fact.
"When we check against more complete government survey data and administrative records from the benefit programs themselves, they confirm that this trend is real," Sherman said. He added that even among the poor, severely poor people have a much tougher time paying their bills. "That's another sign to me that we're seeing something real and troubling," Sherman said.

US military unveils heat-ray gun

The US military has given the first public display of what it says is a revolutionary heat-ray weapon to repel enemies or disperse hostile crowds.
Called the Active Denial System, it projects an invisible high energy beam that produces a sudden burning feeling, but is said to be harmless.
Military officials believe the gun could be used as a non-lethal way of making enemies surrender their weapons.
Officials said there was wide-ranging military interest in the technology.
"This is a breakthrough technology that's going to give our forces a capability they don't now have," defence official Theodore Barna told Reuters news agency.
"We expect the services to add it to their tool kit. And that could happen as early as 2010."
'Blast from an oven'
The prototype weapon — called Silent Guardian — was demonstrated at the Moody Air Force Base in Georgia.

A beam was fired from a large rectangular dish mounted on a Humvee vehicle.
The beam has a reach of up to 500 metres (550 yards), much further than existing non-lethal weapons like rubber bullets.
It can penetrate clothes, suddenly heating up the skin of anyone in its path to 50C.
But it penetrates the skin only to a tiny depth — enough to cause discomfort but no lasting harm, according to the military.
A Reuters journalist who volunteered to be shot with the beam described the sensation as similar to a blast from a very hot oven — too painful to bear without diving for cover.
Crowd control
Military officials said the weapon was one of the key technologies of the future.
"Non-lethal weapons are important for the escalation of force, especially in the environments our forces are operating in," said Marine Col Kirk Hymes, director of the development programme.
The weapon could potentially be used for dispersing hostile crowds in conflict zones such as Iraq or Afghanistan.
It would mean that troops could take effective steps to move people along without resorting to measures such as rubber bullets — bridging the gap between "shouting and shooting", Col Hymes said.

Justice O'Connor's decision in Bush v. Gore led to the current Bush administration's execution of war crimes and atrocities in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places in the Middle East that are as egregious as those committed by the Third Reich and other evil governments in human history.
The lesson is clear.
Those people who may be honorable and distinguished in their chosen profession should always make decisions based upon good rather than evil no matter where their nominal allegiances may rest.
Justice O'Connor was quoted to have said something to the affect that she abhorred the thought of Bush losing the 2000 election to Gore.
She was known to have wanted to retire after the 2000 election for same reason she is now retiring.
She wanted to spend more time with her sick husband.
Unfortunately, she tarnished her distinguished career with the deciding vote in Bush v. Gore by going along with the partisan majority of the Court to interfere with a democratic election that she and the majority feared would be lost in an honest recount.
She dishonored herself and the Supreme Court by succumbing to party allegiances and not The Constitution to which she swore to uphold.
And the constitutional argument she and the majority used to justify their decision was the Equal Protection Clause.
The Equal Protection Clause was the ultimate basis for the decision, but the majority essentially admitted (what was obvious in any event) that it was not basing its conclusion on any general view of what equal protection requires.
The decision in Bush v Gore was not dictated by the law in any sense—either the law found through research, or the law as reflected in the kind of intuitive sense that comes from immersion in the legal culture.
The Equal Protection clause is generally used in matters concerning civil rights.
The majority ignored their basic conservative views supporting federalism and states' rights in order to justify their decision.
History will haunt these justices down for their utter lack of justice and the hypocrisy associated with this decision.

There are those who contend that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is all about Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.   This is absolute nonsense.
In truth, the history of the conflict is not over occupation, and never has been:  it is over the fundamental right of Israel to exist.
The greatest threat to Israel's right to exist, with the prospect of devastating violence, now comes from Iran.
For too long, leaders of both political parties in the United States have not done nearly enough to confront the Russians and the Chinese, who have supplied Iran as it has plowed ahead with its nuclear and missile technology....
In the words of Isaiah, we will make ourselves to Israel 'as hiding places from the winds and shelters from the tempests; as rivers of water in dry places; as shadows of a great rock in a weary land.'
